چکیده

Due to its unique pseudorapidity coverage (2 < η < 5) and excellent performance, the LHCb detector allows for studying soft QCD processes at large rapidities and low transverse momenta. Selected results, such as charged particle multiplicities and densities, forward energy flow and prompt charm production are briefly summarized in these proceedings. The measurements are performed using large samples of proton–proton collision data accumulated with the LHCb detector at √ s = 7 TeV. The results are compared with predictions from a number of different Monte Carlo event generators providing a unique insight into particle production in the forward region at the LHC.

Parton Distributions and QCD at LHCb

We consider the impact that can be made on our understanding of parton distributions (PDFs) and QCD from early measurements at the LHCb experiment. The high rapidity values make the experiment uniquely suited to a detailed study of small-x parton distributions and hence will make a significant contribution towards the clarification of both experimental and theoretical uncertainties on PDFs and ...

Hard Diffraction and Central Diffraction in Hadron–hadron and Photon–hadron Collisions∗

Hadron production in single and central diffraction dissociation is studied in a model which includes soft hadron interaction as controlled by a supercritical pomeron parametrization and hard diffraction. Hard diffraction is described using leading-order QCD matrix elements together with the parton distributions for the proton, the less well known photon parton densities and a conjectured parto...

Hard Diffraction from Parton Rescattering in QCD

We analyze the QCD dynamics of diffractive deep inelastic scattering. The presence of a rapidity gap between the target and diffractive system requires that the target remnant emerges in a color singlet state, which we show is made possible by the soft rescattering of the struck quark. This rescattering is described by the path-ordered exponential (Wilson line) in the expression for the parton ...

Diffraction in QCD

Results on soft and hard diffraction are briefly reviewed and placed in a QCD perspective using a parton model approach. Issues addressed include factorization, scaling properties, universality of rapidity gap formation, and unitarity. Predictions for differential cross sections of processes with multiple rapidity gaps are presented with examples for the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. ...
